I will soon be graduating
from the University of New Hampshire with two degrees. The first is a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Philosophy, and is accompanied by an Associate of Applied Science degree in
Business Management.
Two of my greatest strengths
are my disciplined nature and strategic thinking. I say this because I always
have a detailed plan, but I can also think on my feet if something goes wrong.
An instance in which I
remember exemplifying these traits was during a golf tournament fundraiser I
was managing. As a capstone course in my
business program at the University of New Hampshire, I was elected to manage a
class of 23 peers for the semester. The
goal of the course was to raise $10,000 dollars for an in-major scholarship
program.
Throughout the semester I
delegated responsibilities and oversaw collection of raffle prizes,
organization of the tournament, sales of golf tickets, and acquiring sponsorships,.
The day of the event I arrived at 5 in the morning to set up and prepare the
volunteers for the day.
I was very proud of my
organized plans and was displaying my extremely disciplined side. With me, in color coded folders of course,
were seating charts, prize envelopes, personnel assignments and personalized
itineraries for each of my 25 volunteers. My plan of attack for the day was
absolutely flawless.
…Until 10 volunteers didn’t
show… And it started to rain…
It was time to put my
strategic disposition into action. The
golfers were starting to get restless, and I still had unmanned stations on the
course. I gathered the staff that did show up and we frantically called friends
and classmates until we had just enough bodies to get by.
After re-assigning teams,
training the new helpers, and somehow finding umbrellas for everyone, the
shotgun went off, and the tournament began right on time.
At the end of the day I was
drenched, cold, sniffling, and absolutely thrilled that we had raised over
13,000 dollars for the scholarship program that had previously helped to fund
my education.
This is just one example in
which I used my disciplined and strategic personality, and this is what I can
bring to your organization.
